Borugo, the animal

Painted by Diego Vásquez,
Ticuna artist from Mocagua

The name of Borugo was inspired by a local mammal (Agouti Paca, now Cuniculus Paca; the name comes from quechua p'aqo, reddish), which constitutes one of the biggest rodents in the world. The animal can be found from the South of Mexico to the North of Argentina. Characteristically their fingerprints consist of four prints from the forefoot and three from the backfoot. They live in caves made in the ground and tree roots, close to rivers and creeks. Borugos often share their caves with snakes whom offer them protection.
